화가 성은혜는 각국을 여행하면서 각 나라마다의 특색 있는 건물과 풍정을 화폭에 담아왔다.

이러한 이국적인 풍경을 유화를 통하여 기본적인 대상파악에 역점을 두면서

회화적 감동을 우선적인 덕목으로 삼고 이를 통해 묘사를 뛰어넘는

어떤 경지를 추구하고 있다는 생각이 든다.

 

아울러 대담하면서도 서정취가 짙게 우러나오는 그림, 감성과 희망에 찬 그림을 추구하고 있다.

그녀의 작업은 사실주의를 표방하면서도 거기에 갇히지 않고 다양한 방법으로 표현영역을 부단히 모색하고 확장하려는 작가적 태도와 무엇보다도 유채가 지니고 있는 재료 및 기법을 살리면서도 부단한 창작의지에 대한 열정의 산물들이다.

그녀의 그림에서 주된 특징을 두 가지로 꼽아 보라고 한다면 색채와 형태를 예로 들 수 있다.

무엇보다도 정제된 색채의 간결함과 형태와 대상의 단아함이 그대로 살아 있으며,

대상을 삼차원인 입체와 평면이 적절히 맞물려

강조와 생략이 조화를 이루고 밝고 맑은 색채가 부가되어 평정심을 유발한다.

 

현대회화가 특별한 관심을 갖고 있는 것은 이미 색채가 장식적인 것에 수반되는 것이 아니라

그림을 완성하고 지각적인 감응을 주는 명확한 ‘질서’ 가운데 하나라는 것을 의미한다.

 

마찬가지로 성은혜가 형태조형과 색채를 대단히 중시하는 것은

좀 더 바른 미적 가치를 조형적으로 완성하려는 의지를 강하게 내포하고 있는 것을 의미한다.

 

이러한 작업적 태도로 인해 화면은 여러 가지 원색과 중간 톤의 색조들이 겹겹이 톤을 이루면서

마치 한편의 음악에서 여러 음색과 선율들이 흘러나오는 것처럼

다양한 색의 하모니가 이루어져 색채의 교향곡을 듣는 것 같은 느낌을 준다.

 

화려한 감수성이나 색채감각, 서정시적인 구성방식 등은 전적으로 계산되거나 의도된 노력의 소산이 아니라 천부적 재능 또는 낭만주의자들의 오래된 수사를 빌린다면

자연유로적(自然流露的)인 흘러넘침 같은 것으로 생각할 수 있다.

색채와 더불어 화면은 미묘한 표현과 기법으로 세련되고 정제되어 회화적 표현의 한계를 넘어서는데,

이는 단지 눈에 보이는 대상을 그대로 실사하기보다는

 작가의 상상력과 조형적 감각을 통하여 재창작된 시각적 구성을 보여준다.

 

붓과 나이프의 적절한 배합을 통해 이미지를 중첩시켜 회화적인 다양한 변화를 이끌어 내는가 하면,

붓 터치에서 오는 임파스토 기법과 나이프로 두터운 마티에르를 형성하면서

현실과 가상의 공간을 넘나들며 이중적인 회화적 변주를 거듭해내고 있다.

 

한편, 물감을 나이프로 찍어 바르는 과정에서 생기는 거친 터치는 감정의 파장을 나타낸다.

내면 속에서 들끓어 오르는 표현 욕구를 여과시키지 않고

그대로 받아 내는데 효과적인 나이프 터치는 감성적인 서술에 적합하다.

 

나이프는 딱딱한 쇠붙이로 만들어졌기 때문에 섬세하고 이지적인 묘사에 부적합하다.

 

반면에 손끝으로 전달되는 표현감정은 오히려 자체적인 표현력을 가진 부드러운 붓보다 직접적이다.

표현감정의 전달에서 직접성을 가지는 것이다.

그러기에 나이프 터치는 자연히 형태가 단순하고 선이 굵게 마련이다.

 

이를 통해 거친 질감과 순화된 색채 이미지 속을 통과하면서 감정의 여과를 맛보는 것이다.

작품마다 단순화되고 평면적인 형태와 대상의 의미가 그대로 남아 있으며, 

 

대상을 공간과 원근법적인 삼차원이 입체로 보고 표현했다기보다는 대상을 간략화 시켜

 

마치 편화와 같은 평면성을 강조하고 여기에 원색 등

 

밝고 맑은 색채가 부가되어 장식적인 요소가 강하다.

 

 

또한 사실적인 형태를 의식하면서 거기에 얽매이지 않은 자유로운 붓 터치와

 

나이프의 다양한 기법처리로 이미지를 엮어 나가는 능숙한 조형기법으로 인해

 

독특한 이국적인 향취가 물씬 풍겨 나온다.

 

 

마치 색종이를 찢어 붙여 모자이크한 것 같은 화면은 동화 같은 뉘앙스를 풍겨주기도 한다.

 

항상 사실주의를 표방하면서도 거기에 갇히지 않고

 

다양한 방법으로 표현영역을 꾸준히 모색하고 확장하려는 작가적 태도와 함께

 

무엇보다도 유화가 가지고 있는 재료 및 기법을 살리면서도

 

부단한 창작의지에 대한 열정의 산물로 여겨진다.

 

 

감성적인 표현에 숨겨져 있는 미적 쾌감이 무엇인지를

 

스스로 깨달아 가면서 작업하는 태도는 작가로서의 확고한 신념이 읽혀진다.

The Artist Sung, Eun Hye have hold the exotic buildings

and landscapes in her canvas traveling all over the world.

 

I easily feel that she has pursued some ideal state beyond description putting the stress

on the artistic movement through the oil paintings.

 

She expressed boldly but sentimentally touched for the artistic effect and hope.

Her work is professed for realism but she didn't confine her brush only in it

 but tried variety of expressing methods and expanded her artistic territory.

 

Her pictures are made by her endless passion for creativity which is going with the approaches made by rape's unique and effective using.

If Somebody asks what the two characters of her pictures are,

I can answer they are color and shape.

 

Most of all, her simple color and the neatness treatment of the object are in her pictures

and three dimensional solids and planes, emphasis and emissions,

clean and bright color are well coordinated.

 

Modern arts are interested not in the decoration-functional color

but in the order completing-funtional color which finishes

the pictures and gives sensational movement.

 

In the same way, she pursues the shape and color as the way

of completing her right artistic value.

This kind of working attitude which overlaps the primary colors and mid-tone colors over

and over produces the colorful picture symphony having variety of tunes.

 

Her sumptuous sensitivity and color sense, lyric composure are not calculated or intended

but by the innate talent to be called by romantic word -Natural Stream of Sense.

 

The screen filled with variety of colors and unique techniques beyonds

the artistic limit can be done by the compounding ability.

 

She molds the shape and her imagination into one visual formation.

 

Her knife and brush overlaps to lead the artistic changes, and the impasto approach of the brushing and matiere of knife erases the boundary of the reality and imagination repeatedly.

Meanwhile, the rough touch of knife means the eruption of emotion.

The knife touch can express the desire from the bottom of the heart without filtration.

 

Knife is stiff metal which is not fit to express the detailed and intellectual description.

On the other hand, for some rough skill, it's far effective than the brush.

 

It has the directness in terms of emotional ｅxpression.

So the knife touches are usually simple and thick.

 

Through the rough matiere and purified color image, you can filter the emotion.

Her pictures have simplified and planed shape decorated with clean and bright primary colors.

She didn't draw the objects as they are in the three dimensional one but compacted the them.

 

She stressed the plane like technique which seem to be a pen pictures.

Not binding the realism, her brushes were freely run,

the knives were variously used to make her pictures exotic.

The mosaic like screen done by color papers seems a fairy tale.

 

Her variety of techniques, the attitude trying to expand her artistic domain,

the passion for creative piece of work made her today.

 

Her belief as an artist can be shown endlessly through the pictures which

pursue aesthetic satisfaction hidden behind the sensational ｅxpression.
